Upon graduating from Appalachian State University in NC, Cheri worked with austic children in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania in the early 1980’s.
After “retiring”, she has been active over the years in numerous philanthropic endeavors and community organizations, but her passion has been in devoting her time to raising her two children Stuart and Maggie, instilling in them solid Christian values with the hope that they will pass the same on to their children and in that regard, that they will give back to the world that has given so much to them.
She has organized fundraisers for numerous organizations, served as chairman of Christian Education at the Congregational Church in New Canaan, Ct., President of the Parent’s Association and sat on advisory board to the Superintendent of schools in New Canaan, Ct, organized an outreach program for pre K-9th graders at the Tuxedo Park School in NY. She served on the board of the Parr Family Foundation which was instrumental in creating the Parr Center for Ethics at The University of NC in Chapel Hill.
She deeply believes that all children should be loved, respected and given an opportunity to a full and meaningful life. Many years ago, her pastor’s weekly benediction made a tremendous impact on how she wanted to live her life, “go forth into the world in peace, be of good courage, hold fast that which is good, render to no one evil for evil, support the weak, help the afflicted, honor all persons, love and serve the Lord, rejoicing in the power of his spirit”. It has been an integral part in guiding her through her life. She is married to Gordon Martin and in addition to her own two children, she has two stepchildren and two step grandchildren!
